Whisker’s Litter-Robot Becomes First Automatic Litter Box Eligible for HSA/FSA Spending

Whisker, the Michigan-based company behind the popular Litter-Robot line, announced a first for the pet-care industry: its automatic litter boxes and feeding devices now qualify for Health Savings Account (HSA) and Flexible Spending Account (FSA) spending. The decision makes Litter-Robot the only automatic litter box currently eligible for pre-tax health funds.

The move comes just weeks after Whisker unveiled its revamped Litter-Robot lineup—a signal that the company intends to position automated pet care as more than a lifestyle luxury. CEO Jacob Zuppke framed the announcement as part of Whisker’s broader mission to design technology that reduces barriers for people caring for their pets.

“Automatic cat care isn't just about convenience,” Zuppke said. “It's about giving people the ability to care for their pets without compromise… HSA/FSA eligibility is validation that innovation grounded in empathy can transform everyday life.”

The new eligibility particularly benefits cat owners with medical conditions that make daily litter box maintenance difficult or unsafe. Qualifying conditions include chronic pain, arthritis, limited mobility, respiratory issues, neurological challenges, and other disabilities that can turn lifting, bending, or frequent cleaning into a health risk.

Products that now qualify include the newly launched Litter-Robot 5, Litter-Robot 5 Pro, Litter-Robot EVO, as well as established offerings like Litter-Robot 4 and the Feeder-Robot. To access pre-tax funds, customers must obtain a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN).

Whisker partnered with Sika Health to streamline the LMN process, covering all associated fees to ensure no added cost to customers. The partnership reflects a growing recognition that a cleaner, more automated home environment contributes to both human and animal wellbeing.

HSA/FSA eligibility begins December 5, 2025, for qualifying purchases made through litter-robot.com and participating Sika Health marketplaces. A full list of eligible products and qualifying conditions is available on Whisker’s site.
